Separate the account from its holdings
A TFSA is a registered account structure, not a single savings product. Cash, term deposits and investments can have very different access and risk characteristics.
Check contribution records
Review your own transactions and current guidance before adding or moving funds. Use the provider’s transfer process when moving a registered account.
Before you decide
- Read the current product agreement and full fee schedule.
- Confirm the legal provider, eligibility and applicable protection.
- Keep the terms you relied on and note questions for the provider.
A practical example
Withdrawing and immediately replacing TFSA funds can create a contribution issue if you do not have sufficient available room. A direct issuer transfer is a different process.
Questions to ask the provider
- What is my available room?
- Am I transferring or withdrawing?
- What are the investment and withdrawal restrictions?
Primary-source guidance
Withdrawals generally restore contribution room in the next calendar year. Replacing a withdrawal in the same year requires sufficient available room.
